Growth prompts new offices for Korean Register

Seoul: The Korean Register of Shipping (KR) announced last week that the total number of ships on its books has reached an all time high of 2,187 with an aggregated gross tonnage of 27.3m. The figures, valid as of May 31, have prompted the society to open three new offices in China and South Africa later this year, said KR's recently elected chairman and ceo, Oh Kong-gyun.

The society has taken a variety of measures to improve safety standards on its classed vessels including the introduction of a flying squad of experienced surveyors, a range of pre-inspection services and special CSR software for shipbuilding.

KR is also developing a software package (Rulecheck) for the European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA) to give EU port state control officers a complete list of the rules, regulations and procedures that need to be applied in their work. The system is scheduled for delivery at the end of November 2007.  [02/07/07]
