Sri Lanka’s Hambantota port has turned to offering lay-up services with the first vessel being a drillship that will be moored at the port for six months, reports said.

The 1976-built drillship Aban Abraham was berthed last week at Hambantota for a warm lay-up, requiring minimum crew to keep equipment running from time to time or prepare for other work so that it can be decommissioned quickly.

“We leveraged heavily on the global marine network access of CMPort and were supported by the Sri Lanka Ports Authority, to make this operation a reality,” commented Tissa Wickramasinghe, coo of Hambantota International Port Group (HIPG).

Hambantota port is run by HIPG, a joint ventire with China’s CMPort.

“The market is well aware of more established ports and the fact that the Hambantota International Port was chosen despite this, clearly proves that we are benchmarking international standards,” Wickramasinghe added.

The drillship will be supervised by Maritime Agencies, a unit of Colombo-based Hayleys Advantis.
