Hanjin Shipping chairman passes away

Seoul: Hanjin Shipping chairman & CEO Soo-ho Cho died after a long illness on November 26, 2006 at Asan Medical Center, Seoul. He was 53 years old.
Born in Incheon, Korea in 1954, Cho earned a bachelor's degree in business from University of Southern California in 1979. Upon graduation, he joined Korean Air, part of the sprawling family owned Hanjin Group, to start his career as manager.
Cho joined Hanjin Shipping in 1985 as Senior Vice President and took his post as President & CEO in 1994 and then Chairman & CEO in 2003.
Cho had been an active member of Box Club of CEOs of container lines worldwide since 1993. From 1995 to 1997, he made great contribution to the stabilization of the global shipping market as the fourth Chairman of TSA (Transpacific Stabilization Agreement). He also served as Director of WSC (World Shipping Council) from 2000 to 2005.
On the domestic front, Cho served as Chairman of Korea Shipowners Association from 1997 to early 2002, endeavoring to boost the status of the Korean shipping industry in the global market. He also served as President of Korea Youth Sea Explorers Association from 1994 to 2002, promoting the image of the Korean shipping industry nationwide.
Cho Soo-ho, a younger brother of Cho Yang-ho, chairman of Korean Air and the Hanjin Group, is survived by his wife Choi Eun-young and two daughters.
Cho Yang-ho is the eldest of the late elder Cho's four sons, with the two other sons now serving as chairman of Hanjin Heavy Industries and Construction and Meritz Securities Co., respectively.  [27/11/06]
