Hansa Brandenburg returns safely to port after fire
The Leonhardt and Blumberg owned boxship Hansa Brandenburg has berthed safely in the port of St Louis, Mauritius, with preparations being made for the discharge of containers.

The Liberian-flagged ship suffered an extensive fire on July 15, en-route from Singapore to Durban, 200 nm Northeast of Mauritius. Although the fore superstructure and the aft cargo holds were worst affected, the 17 crew members managed to escape with their lives, and were picked up by Hermann Buss-owned containership Donau Trader.

Salvage firms Five Oceans Salvage and SMIT Salvage extinguished the fire and hitched a tow line to the stricken ship.

It was the second major fire on a container vessel in the Indian Ocean this month after the fore section of the stricken boxship MOL Comfort caught fire and later sank while being towed to Oman.
