HHI to build eight Hapag Lloyd vessels

Seoul: South Korean shipyard Hyundai Heavy Industries has been commissioned to build eight 103,000dwt container vessels for German container liner Hapag Lloyd (HL). The vessels, which are designed to carry 8,750teu, will have a length of 335mtr and a beam of 43mtr each.

"With this order, Hapag-Lloyd is giving fleet homogeneity and thus savings in operational costs priority over opting for a ship size capable of transporting over 10,000teu," said HL executive board chairman Michael Behrendt. "We have had very positive results with the five units we already deploy. They are efficient and incorporate state-of-the-art technology, and they can be flexibly deployed on various routes if required by the market situation."

The new orders for the container line were spurred by a report by economic research institute Global Insight that predicts a 40% surge in container transport volumes by 2011. HL plans to deploy the newbuildings on the routes to and from Asia, which it says, "continue to account for the highest growth in container transport".  [22/05/07]
