Ulsan: The world's leading shipbuilder Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) has launched a 317,000 dwt VLCC designed with an eco-friendly ballast water treatment system. The VLCC was delivered to Oman Shipping Company on Monday. HHI claimed that this is the first VLCC with the new electrolysis ballast water treatment system that can treat as much as 100,000 tonnes of ballast water. The market for ballast water treatment system is expected to grow to over $30bn due to international regulations mandating all ships by 2017 to have ballast water treatment system installed. South Korea-based HHI is also developing other green marine technologies such as high output eco-friendly marine engines, a 3,000 tonnes hybrid petrol vessel, and ballast water treatment systems incorporated with filter and UV sterilising system.
