HK shippers agree Port Security Charge

HK shippers agree Port Security Charge

Hong Kong: The Hong Kong Shippers' Council has reached agreement with leading container terminal operators at the port - HIT, Modern Terminals, Cosco-HIT Terminals (Hong Kong), Asia Container Terminals and CSX World Terminals Hong Kong - over the implementation of a Port Security Charge (PSC). Effective mid-August, HK$20 per teu and HK$30 per feu will be levied, with the Council deducting an admin fee of HK$2 per container and passing the rest of costs directly on to shippers. This method was deemed preferable to shippers having to pay a PSC through the shipping lines to the operators, says the Council. Monies collected are intended strictly for security enhancements, with the scheme subject to review after 18 months.  [25/07/06]
