Although this was a 6.4% rise from the 1.73m teu handled the month before, the April number was slightly skewed by the fact that the terminals operated by Hong Kong International Terminals (HIT) had suffered from a strike for much of the reporting period.
Throughput at the midstream operations at non-Kwai Tsing terminals fell 19.8% from the year before to 410,000 teu while at the Kwai Tsing terminals boxes handled fell 7.4% to 1.43m teu.
For the year-to-date, container throughput at 8.84m teu is 9.1% lower than the corresponding period last year.
