Hong Kong: First quarter figures just out show Hong Kong's slide down the container port rankings is set to continue with Shanghai surpassing it for the first time in the opening three months of the year.
The mainland port outstripped Hong Kong by 380,000 teu in the first quarter.
Hong Kong port, including container terminals at Kwai Tsing, the river terminal and mid-stream services, handled 5.5 million teu in the first quarter, up 2.3 per cent over the same period last year.
Shanghai moved 5.88 million teu, up 28 per cent. Shenzhen throughput rose 8.2 per cent to 4.26 million teu. Shenzhen will likely outstrip Hong Kong next year too. [19/04/07]
