Hyundai Mipo lands order to build LNG-fuelled bulker for Posco
South Korea’s Hyundai Mipo Dockyard has landed an order to build one LNG-fuelled bulk carrier from domestic steel firm Posco.

Posco announced that it will supply high manganese steel to the shipyard in the third quarter of this year for building the LNG fuel tank of the vessel.

The high manganese steel, also called Hadfield steel, has a 20% manganese content and is durable under cold temperatures of up to minus 162 degree celsius.

“Once this vessel is put into operation, high manganese steel will become more likely to be adopted as a material for ultra-low-temperature environments by the International Maritime Organization,” Posco said.

The 50,000-dwt bulk carrier, due for delivery in late-2017, will be deployed to transport limestone used by Posco from Gangwon province to the company’s steel mill in Gwangyang city.

The newbuild will be of dual-fuel engine capable of running on both heavy fuel oil and LNG, according to Posco.
