IHIMU and NYK develop Japn's largest boxships

Tokyo: IHI Marine United Inc (IHIMU) has announced that it has received an order for three 9,300-teu containerships from Nippon Yusen Kaisha (NYK). IHIMU will construct the ships - co-designed with NYK - at its Kure Shipyard and deliver them between 2009 and 2010.

The ship is the largest containership to be built in Japan, according to the Kaiji Press. By adding an extra layer below deck the ship's dimensions are similar to an existing 8,600 teu design. The operation efficiency and energy saving have also been improved by reducing the number of cylinders in main engines by one to 11.  [24/08/07]
