Incheon port targets 11.4% rise in box throughput in 2015

In 2014, the North East Asian port moved a total of 2.33m teu, and it is expecting growth ahead amid port expansion plans and new direct shipping services calling at the port.

“Incheon New Port, composed of two container terminals, will be able to accommodate 8,000 teu container vessels,” Yoo Chang-Keun, president of IPA, told Seatrade Global.

Terminal B of the new port, scheduled to open in June, will boast a 14-metre water depth and quay length of 410 metres. Terminal A, slated to be completed in early 2016, will feature a similar 14-metre water depth but longer quay length of 800 metres.

“Korean exporters and importers will be able to do their business towards Europe and the American continent cheaper and faster than before, once the new port with deeper draught of 14 metres opens in June,” Yoo said.

He added that regional and global container carriers are showing interest in the development of Incheon port.

In March this year, the G6 Alliance added a call at Incheon port on its CC1 (Central China 1) service that connects Northeast Asia to the US. The G6 Alliance will provide its weekly service with 6,800 teu container vessels starting from June.

At present, the main container terminal to the south of Incheon port can accommodate up to seven 3,000 teu container vessels.
