India asked to pull its weight in maritime regulation arena

Mumbai: Spyros Polemis, chairman of the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) and president of the International Shipping Federation (ISF), stressed the need for India to take a more active role in the debate on Shipping regulations. Speaking at the India Maritime Summit last week, Polemis spoke highly of the Indian government's participation within the IMO and ILO but said, 'the Indian shipping industry is still not really punching at its full weight in global maritime regulatory discussions' and asked the country to make themselves heard with regard to the revision of MARPOL Annex VI on air emissions, and promoting the early ratification of the IMO Ballast Water Management Convention.  [07/11/06]
