Mumbai: The Indian Government is currently considering expressions of interest from a number of companies, including Korea -based STX shipyard, for the construction of a new yard capable of constructing 300,000dwt vessels. The yard, scheduled for completion by end 2010, will be located on India's eastern coast. Officials from Ennore Port (pictured) are in charge of the project, which may cost up to $2.4bn to construct.
Other applicants vying to set up the yard include UK-based McNulty Offshore Construction as well as India-based companies Larsen & Toubro, Afcons, Essar Construction, Apeejay group, Goodearth Maritime, ABG Shipyard and IMC. Many of the local companies have international partners who would benefit from a stake in the completed project.
The government is also considering a sister project which would be built on the Western coast under the supervision of the Mumbai port Trust. [15/05/07]
