Mumbai: The Indian Minister of shipping, road transport and highway TR Baalu (pictured) is believed to be considering a proposal to increase financial incentives for costal shipping at major ports in the country. Although the government currently offers a 40% rebate, officials believes that extra steps, such as dedicated berths for coastal traffic, are needed to ensure growth in the sector. Another policy would see Indian-flagged vessels, whose cargo is only partially destined for local delivery, receive a concession on tariffs. Approximately 44m tonne of cargo are transported along the inland water transportation system at present. [04/04/07]
