Mumbai: The Indian government has launched an investigation of Mississippi-based marine fabrication company Signal International following allegations of mistreatment by over 100 Indian workers, reports the Hindu. "We are pursuing the matter seriously," a senior official of the Indian Embassy told PTI. "Our Mission (Consulate) in Houston, Texas is following this," the official added.
The workers, the majority of whom were welders and pipe-fitters, have quit their jobs as part of their protest against the shipyard for what they claim were providing substandard housing and visa arrangements.
According to news reports, the workers have reported their situation to the US Department of Justice and demanded that the company be tried on human trafficking charges. [11/03/08]
