Tehran: Iran has announced plans to transfer ownership of its currently state run sea port terminals in the Caspian Sea and the Persian Gulf to the private sector in the near future, reports local new channel Press TV. The move would comply with a mandate for sweeping privatisation of state run organisations issued by the Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei.
The head of the Iranian Ports and Shipping Organization, Ali Taheri, would be in charge of the move, which is expected to improve the quality of services available at the port. It is also hoped that privatisation of the ports would encourage investment in logistics infrastructure connecting the ports to the hinterland. [27/04/07]
