Seoul: Furthering its Asian presence International Registries, Inc, which runs the Marshall Islands flag, announced yesterday it has opened a new representative office in Seoul. The office, IRI's seventh in the region, will be run by Capt Young Kim, an ex-seafarer with HMM who has most recently been the md of Korean Adjusters and Surveyors Corporation.
"My first trip to Seoul was last July," recounts Annie Ng, md of IRI (Far East), "and it was a complete eye opener." Since then Ms Ng and Capt Kim met all key owners in the country and found they "all shared positive attitude towards open registries."
Korea has established a second national flag on Jeju island but counters Ms Ng that flag still stipulates the need for ships to have a minimum of seven Korean officers onboard, an increasingly onerous requirement.
In separate news IRI has doubled the size of its Singaporean office as business is taking off. And, revealed exclusively to SeatradeAsia-Online, IRI will establish an office in Taipei in the coming two years. [04/04/07]
