Japan approves 'easy to install' NYK ballast water management system
An NYK Group company has gained Japanese government approval for its “breakthrough” ballast water management system (BWMS) that does not require drydocking for installation.

Nippon Yuka Kogyo’s SKY-System, developed with Katayama Chemical Industries, has received approval from Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism.

The system uses a chemical biocide, Peraclean Ocean, that the company says is the very first that can reliably sterilize organisms regardless of the quality of the ballast water be it seawater, brackish water, freshwater or ice-cold water.

The system, which based on pictures from NYK is in a container fitted on the vessel deck, can be installed without drydocking.

“It is a simple, integrated unit that requires only a small space, so it is easy to install during operation without significant remodeling. In this sense, it is a breakthrough ballast-water management system that requires minimal off-hire (or none, in most cases) and minimises installation cost,” NYK said.
