Japanese VLCC in anti-piracy drill

Tokyo: NYK has conducted a joint anti-piracy exercise with the Japan Coast Guard. The September 15 exercise scenario had the company's 299,980dwt crude-oil tanker Toba being attacked by pirates in the South China Sea. The Japan Coast Guard's Ryukyu, a patrol boat cruising in the vicinity, went to the assistance of the simulated attack to offer assistance. The Japanese Shipowners' Association (JSA) and the International Shipping Division of the Maritime Bureau of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport (MLIT) also participated in the exercise. The exercise follows an anti-terrorism drill that NYK conducted with the Hong Kong Police Force in May.  [19/09/06]
