JNPT opens India's largest container terminal

Mumbai: The Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) this week officially inaugurate its third container terminal: Gateway Terminals India (GTI). The new 1.5m teu capacity terminal, the largest in India, is operated by GTI Private Limited, a joint venture between APM Terminals and Container Corporation of India (Concor). Although only inaugurated this week, GTI has been partially operational since March 14, 2006 and currently receives calls from nine different liner services, a number expected to reach nearer 13 by February. JNPT, which handled 3.08m teus during 2006, is currently in the process of screening bids for its fourth container terminal worth $1.1bn.  [05/01/07]
