"K" Line moves to step up its LNG game

Tokyo: Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha ("K" Line) reports that it has transferred management of its LNG carriers trading mainly in the Asia Pacific region from Group headquarters to its wholly owned shipmanagement subsidiary "K" Line Ship Management Co (KLSM), also based in Tokyo, effective January 1.

The Group currently owns 31 LNG carriers, of which it manages seven - four from Tokyo and three from London - but this number is set to increase to 48 by 2009, with 15 of them to be self-managed.

Although it has a zero accident rate with LNG to date, the company says it wishes to take every step possible to  ensure safe and efficient operations of this expanded fleet. It is also stepping up educational programmes to attract, train and retain the best qualified seafarers.

KLSM currently manages 43 ships, including 14 lpg carriers and oil and product carriers.  [27/11/06]
