Keppel Singmarine has bagged a contract to build two dual-fuel dredgers for Van Oord with an option for a third.

The two trialing hopper suction dredgers (THSD) for Van Oord are due to be delivered by the Singapore yard in Q4 2020 and Q2021. Van Oord has an option for a third newbuild to be exercised within one year.

The dredgers will have a hopper capacity of 10,500 cu m and be dual fuel and capable of running on liquefied natural gas (LNG). The ability to run on an LNG is key factor for Van Oord.

Jaap de Jong, staff director, Ship Management Department at Van Oord, said: “Last month we already launched our first LNG powered crane vessel. The TSHDs will be the first LNG hopper dredgers in our fleet. We look forward to this partnership with Keppel as we adopt LNG as a marine fuel to reduce our global carbon footprint."

“Keppel is currently constructing five other dredgers, and we are able to build on our experience and capabilities to meet Van Oord's needs. This new order for dredgers of high specifications attests to our strength as a specialised shipbuilder,” said Abu Bakar, md gas and specialised vessels for Keppel Offshore & Marine.

No financial details of the deal were released.
