LNG facility in Ras Laffan officially opens

Doha: The LNG facility in Ras Laffan, Qatar's industrial city situated 50 miles north of Qatar's capital, officially opened today. The terminal receives natural gas from Qatar's vast reserves, removes the impurities and then cools it to -160 degrees C to produce LNG ready for shipping overseas.

Among VIP guests due to attend the opening was the Emir of Qatar and Prince Andrew, who led a UK delegation that included officials from the South Hook terminal in Milford Haven, south west Wales. The South Hook LNG terminal in Milford Haven is destined to be the largest LNG receiving facility in Europe, and late last month received its inaugural LNG carrier carrying a shipment of gas from Qatar, thereby marking the first phase of the commissioning project.

"The arrival of the first cargo into South Hook is a significant milestone in the development of the Qatargas 2 project, the world's first full LNG value chain investment," commented Qatargas Operating Company chairman and ceo Faisal Al-Suwaidi.  [06/04/09]
