L&T pitching for $100m Dutch shipbuilding contract

Mumbai: Leading engineering and construction firm, Larsen and Toubro is reported to be in talks with a Dutch shipowner for vessels worth more than $100m, The Wall Street Journal reports. Although the specifics of the deal are yet to be made public, Coert Kleijwegt, managing director of Orient Dutch Shipbroking confirmed that L&T were in negotiations with one of the shareholders of RollDock BV.

L&T recently signed an MOU with RollDock for the construction of two 20,000tonne modular carriers at its Hazira yard in Gujarat, which will supplement the six vessels it is already building for the Netherlands-based company.

L&T has also secured clearance from the Tamil Nadu government for the construction of shipyard-cum-port facility worth an estimated Rs 3,000 crore ($754m) at Kattupalli near Chennai in Southern India. The project will boast an annual output of 25 vessels, including five VLCCs of between 300,000- 350,000 dwt and 20 120,000-200,000dwt Panamax vessels.
