In another potential alternative fuel MAN Diesel & Turbo is to cooperate with Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) on the development of a LPG dual-fuel engine.

MAN Diesel & Turbo signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with HHI’s engine and machinery production division to develop and produce LPG fuelled two-stroke engines.

Bjarne Foldager, vp sales & promotion, two-stroke business at MAN Diesel & Turbo, said: “MAN Diesel & Turbo has previously experienced strong market interest in using LPG as a fuel aboard LPG carriers, but other shipping segments have also begun investigating this option, a general tendency that is growing.”

LPG fuelled engines are another alternative along LNG, and battery powered engines to burning marine fuel oil, allowing owners to meet more stringent environmental limits that are coming into force.

Like LNG, LPG contains no sulphur, so easily complies with the IMO’s 0.5% sulphur cap for marine fuel from 2020, and according to Foldager is also widely available.

“It is therefore becoming an increasingly attractive alternative to other, low-sulphur fuel types,” he added.

MAN Diesel & Turbo said it expected installation of a dual-fuel LPG engine to be “very competitive” price-wise to other dual fuel engines.
