Singapore: "The maritime sector provides a compelling career choice" -  was the message to a few dozen youth (pictured) who joined some maritime industry leaders at the launch of MaritimeONE at Pan-Asian extravaganza, Sea Asia, last week. MaritimeONE is an industry-led initiative for maritime stakeholders to collectively raise awareness and attract quality manpower to the maritime sector. It will be guided by a consultative forum chaired by the Singapore Maritime Foundation's Chairman Mr Teo Siong Seng, involving the government, employers and local Institutes of Higher Learning.

Officiating at the function, Mrs Lim Hwee Hua,Minister Of State For Finance And Transport said, "The maritime careers' tagline "sea of opportunities, shore of possibilities" encapsulates the wide range of maritime careers available in the industry, both at sea and on shore". She also pointed out that the maritime transport is crucial to the world economy, as shipping is still responsible for transporting 90% of global trade and this made for bright prospects.  She predicted "you will soon discover that the maritime sector is one where you work hard and you play hard."

Some companies namely - First Ship Lease (FSL) Trust Management, K Line, Pacific International Lines, and TORM - have already come forward to offer scholarships under MaritimeONE.  [10/04/07]
