Oakland: Matson Navigation Co has taken delivery of a fourth and final 2,500teu boxship newbuild for deployment on its China - Long Beach Express service. The vessels, built by Aker Philadelphia Shipyard, offer fuel savings of 25% or more over Matson's older tonnage, and have allowed the US line to offer what it claims are the fastest transit times to Long Beach from Ningbo and Shanghai - a published 11 days. Eastbound crossings have in fact averaged 10.4 days since start-up of the service in February, reports Matson; the westbound route takes longer, calling Hawaii and Guam. [17/07/06]
