The three-year collaboration agreement will allow the two Japanese shipbuilders to focus on improving various aspects of a ship design for energy optimisation and fuel efficiency.
The initiative combines MHI's technological capabilities in the development of energy-saving vessels and Imabari's cost competitiveness, in order to establish an advantageous framework for competing in the international shipbuilding market.
The two yards would also be able to accommodate bulk orders such as the construction of multiple ships of the same design.
Demand by shipowners for more energy-saving vessels is increasing significantly given the current trend toward adoption of international marine transportation rules for reducing environment burdens, coupled with continuing bunker price escalation.
