Milestone green equipment orders for newbuildings at Asian yards

Singapore: In signs of a growing industry trend, environmental equipment suppliers have announced breakthrough newbuilding contracts at Asian yards. Hamworthy Krystallon says Italian owner Messina has selected its seawater scrubbers for four 45,000dwt roro  vessels under construction at DSME, "the first commercial order for technology capable of meeting new EU regulations on fuel emissions from ships that does not require owners to switch to high cost distillates."

Meanwhile, Oceansaver of Norway reports that an undisclosed Hong Kong owner has signed a major ballast water management (BWM) system contract for six VLCCs to be built at SWS in China, with more orders under negotiation. The order makes it leading BWM system supplier to the large ship segment, it says, adding: "Shipowners are acting on IMO's International Convention for the Control and Management of Ship's Ballast Water and sediments which takes effect from 2012 for new vessels."  [11/06/10]
