Mitsubishi Heavy develops ship safety system

Mitsubishi Heavy develops ship safety system
Tokyo: Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) has developed a new device to enhance the damage stability of ships and reduce the risk of capsizing.

MHI has also received an order for a vessel equipped with the system from Nippon Shipping.

MHI proprietarily developed the system in response to the strengthening of regulations on ship stability during navigation in January 2009, based on revisions to the Solas Convention adopted by IMO in 1974.

MHI is targeting installation of its newly patented righting moment recovery system on new ships such as ro-ro, pure car and truck carriers and ferries.

“If the ship's hull is damaged during navigation, the new system enables prompt conveyance of any flooded seawater into void spaces in the ship's bottom, thereby reducing capsizing risk through enhancement of righting momentum by quickly lowering the ship's center of gravity,” MHI said.
