Miyahara to hand on NYK presidency

Tokyo: Japanese shipping giant Nippon Yusen Kaisha (NYK) has announced that its current president Koji Miyahara (pictured) will hand over the reigns of the company to existing executive vp Yasumi Kudo in April, 2009. Upon passing the title, Miyahara will become chairman, although he will retain his representative rights, while incumbent chairman Takao Kusakari will become director and board counsellor.

Incoming NYK president Kudo has been with NYK since April 1975 and has held a number of roles within the company, including a number of senior management positions.

The NYK Group currently operates about 776 major ocean vessels, as well as fleets of planes, trains, and trucks. The company's shipping fleet includes around 155 containerships, 286 bulk carriers, 55 woodchip carriers, 113 car carriers, 21 reefer carriers, 78 tankers, 30 LNG carriers, and three cruise ships.

NYK's revenue in fiscal 2007 was about $26bn, and the company has offices in 240 locations in 27 countries, warehouses on nearly every continent, and harbor operations in Asia, North America, and Europe.  [29/12/08]
