MOL, JFE develop advanced corrosion-resistant steel plates

MOL, JFE develop advanced corrosion-resistant steel plates

Tokyo: Mitsui OSK Lines (MOL) and JFE Steel Corp have jointly developed an advanced new corrosion-resistant steel plate (trade name: JFE-SIP-OT), which can limit deterioration of crude oil cargo tanks. MOL intends to use the new corrosion-resistant steel on the bottom and upper plates (ceiling) of the cargo oil tanks of its VLCCs to be constructed from here on. The adoption of the material on the upper deck plate is a world first. The new steel plate is estimated to be priced at the same level as when steel is coated, according to MOL. Similar corrosion-resistant steel was developed and is being put to practical use jointly by Nippon Steel Corp. (NSC) and Nippon Yusen Kaisha (NYK).  [31/01/08]
