Mitsui OSK Line (MOL) has named its first LNG-powered tugboat built at Kanagawa Dockyard in Japan.

The 250-ton tugboat Ishin was named on 28 September and is expected to be delivered in February next year. It will be operated by Nihon Tug-Boat in Osaka Bay and be supplied with fuel by Osaka Gas using a truck to ship system.

The tugboat is powered by two Yanmar dual-fuel commercial marine engines 6EY26DF with the ability to use both LNG and fuel oil and features a removable LNG tank on deck.

In addition to not emitting SOx the LNG-fuelled vessel will also see a 25% reduction in CO2 emissions.

“MOL takes a proactive stance in promoting spread of LNG fuel to meet the needs of customers and society alike to reduce the environmental impact of vessel operation,” MOL said.

“Through the operation of Ishin, which has an excellent balance of high-speed sailing and environmental performance, the company looks forward to spurring the development of LNG fuel supply systems in Japan and overseas.”
