More electrical RTGs for Da Chan Bay Terminal One

Shanghai: Da Chan Bay Terminal One, in Western Shenzhen, has taken delivery if its second batch of  environment-friendly electrical electrical rubber-tyred gantry cranes (RTGs), cementing its position as the world's first container terminal to use a full fleet of electrical RTGs. The 10 new new cranes are of the same model as the first batch of 20 RTGs, also produced by Shanghai Zhenhua Port Machinery Company, that was delivered in 2007,

According to the terminal authorities, the electrical RTGs have many advantages over traditional diesel RTGs including energy conservation, reduced energy dissipation as well as quieter and cleaner working environment.  They also equipped with anti-collision and anti-lifting systems to ensure operational safety and require substantially less preventive maintenance, resulting in greater reliability and higher productivity.  
 
"We make environmental consideration an integral part of the Terminal's culture and decision-making, and took the initiative to be the first container terminal in the world that uses a full fleet of electrical RTGs," said Da Chan Bay Terminal One ceo Andrew Milliken. "This initiative is proved to be successful and beneficial in terms of environment-friendliness, productivity and safety."
 
Da Chan Bay Terminal One covers an area of 112 hectares with five berths along its quayside of 1,830 metres and 600 metres wide.  The terminal was opened with its first two berths in December 2007.  The other three berths will be completed in 2008.  Its quay depth is currently -15.5 metres and could be dredged up to -18 metres in the future, able to handle the world's largest existing and planned container vessels.  [24/04/08]
