Hong Kong: The maiden call of the world's largest container vessel to Hong Kong this weekend has got ship spotters and industry enthusiasts alike craning towards Kwai Chung Container Terminals for a chance to see the behemouth owned by Denmark's Maersk Line. The Emma Maersk, built at the company's own Odense yard, will call at Modern Terminals' facility at CT9 late on Saturday night. Reportedly MTL has had to install special 2mtr bumpers on to the side of the Hong Kong's newest terminal to lower the risk of damage to the berth. The ship's capacity is, as always with Maersk, kept secret although she is conservatively put at 13,500teu and some say she can load as many as 14,300. Measuring 1,303 feet in length, 184 feet in width and 207 feet in height, this giant has become quite a spectacle at each port she has called at on her maiden Asian voyage. A party is scheduled onboard on Sunday. [12/10/06]
