Highlighting the disparity between the nominal capacity of containerships and what they can actually carry the Mumbai Maersk has become the first vessel to ever carry 19,000 teu.

The second generation Triple-E vessel Mumbai Maersk with a nominal capacity 20,568 teu left the Port of Tanjung Pelepas in Malaysia bound for Europe last week with a load of 19,038 teu.

According to it was the first vessel in the world to pass the “mythical 19,000-teu mark”, based on loadings reported by other lines.

It highlights the disparity between the nominal capacity of container vessels and the volumes they can actually carry with the largest containerships currently in service, operated by Orient Overseas Container Line (OOCL) having a stated capacity of 21,413 teu.
