The engines, tuned for low fuel consumption at slow-steaming speeds with a long piston stroke, are optimised for bulkers in the handymax, supramax and ultramax ranges as well as medium-sized crude oil and chemical tankers. The UEC50LSH-Eco is the first of a new series of engines designed by MHI-MME, with this particular model to be installed aboard a 35,000 dwt chemical tanker under construction at Shin Kurushima Dockyard.
With the new engine due for completion in March of 2015, the vessel is expected to be completed in October of the same year.
