London: NITC of Iran and West Asia Maritime Ltd of India - as well as A.P. Moller - Maersk A/S - are among new full members of the International Association of Independent Tanker Owners that were approved by the body's autumn Council meeting held last week in London. The nine new members combined control 122 tankers of 12.7m dwt and take Intertanko membership to a total of 280 companies with a fleet of 2,800 tankers. The UAE Shipowners' Association became one of 325 associate members.
NITC chairman Mohammad Souri greeted the decision, saying his company was "very pleased to have become a full member of one of the shipping industry's strongest representative bodies." NITC has been an associate member of Intertanko in the past but now qualifies for full membership as an independent tanker owner following its privatisation in 2000. Souri has also been invited to deliver a keynote address at the Intertanko Tanker Event being held next April in Istanbul. [23/11/07]
