Singapore: The North of England P&I Association (NEPIA) has formally opened a new representative office in Singapore. claims specialist and master mariner Iain Beange, who will head the office, says, 'Singapore has become the largest concentration of our fast-growing Asia-Pacific membership, which now represents 20% of entered tonnage. We look forward to providing members in the region with closer support and advice.' Beange will be assisted by office administrator Elizabeth Er and FD&D lawyer Chris Metcalf.
The new Singapore base will initially serve as a representative office for North of England but is expected to become a full regional liaison office in due course. In the meantime it will lend claims-handling support to the club's Hong Kong office, which will remain the principle claims-handling centre in the Asia-Pacific region. All underwriting will continue to be undertaken centrally from the UK head office in Newcastle-upon-Tyne.
NEPIA insures a fleet of 3000 ships entered by 310 member groups from around the world. Owned tonnage is currently 56m gross tonnes and chartered tonnage accounts for around 14m gross tonnes. [09/07/07]
