NYK to build state-of-the-art container hangar

Tokyo: Liner giant NYK has revealed plans to build a revolutionary, first of its kind, container hangar at Berth no. 6 at Oi Container Terminal (pictured),  Tokyo. The new 8,400sq mtr hangar, to be built in fiscal 2010 and open from the beginning of fiscal 2011, is expected to improve yard usage, lead to increased efficiency in loading and unloading, and reduce the environmental impact of operations.

It is expected to be able to handle 60,000teu per year - a 66% increase over the current handling volume of 36,000teu per year. The new hangar will feature electric outlets for reefer containers and two modern stacker cranes able to handle 48 containers per hour. The cranes will run on electric power, thus reducing CO2 emissions by 63%, in addition to which, thy will remove the need for use of the diesel-powered transfer crane.

NYK has said that it will patent this new hangar and intends to introduce the system abroad.  [31/07/08]
