NYK has ordered the world’s largest LNG-fuelled car carrier from Shin Kurushima Toyohashi Shipbuilding in Japan.

A keel laying ceremony was held for the 7,000 vehicle capacity pure car and truck carrier (PCTC) at the Japanese shipbuilder on 20 September. The vessel due to be delivered to NYK in 2020 is the first large LNG-fuelled car carrier to be built in Japan.

NYK said the vessel had been optimised with a wider vessel design reducing the loss in vehicle capacity due to the size of the LNG fuel tanks.

With the support of Japan’s Ministry of Environment and Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism the vessel will feature additional technologies to increase efficiency by around 40% and reduce CO2 emissions.

NYK’s first LNG-powered LNG carrier entered into service in 2017.
