Tokyo: Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK) has taken delivery of the first of a series of 8,600teu vessels being built by Hyundai Heavy Industries (4) and IHI Marine United (4). The NYK Vega was built by Hyundai HI in Ulsan and like the rest in the series, delivering over coming months, will be assigned to Grand Alliance Asia-Europe services. All the vessels are equipped with electronically controlled engines, fuel tanks placed inside the bulkheads to reduce the risk of fuel leakage in the event of a marine accident, and Alternative Maritime Power technology to allow connection to a land-based electricity supply ('cold ironing'), thereby avoiding emissions in port.
