NYK reduces CO2 18.1% since 2008
NYK has seen an 18.1% reduction in its CO2 emissions per unit of cargo in FY2013, well exceeding the target it set itself in 2008 for a 10% reduction by 2013.

The result will help the  target discussed in NYK’s 2011 “More than shipping 2013” medium-term management plan, which calls for a 10% improvement in fuel-efficiency over the 2010 level, by the beginning of the 2015 fiscal year.

NYK puts the result down to what it calls the “aggressive introduction” of fuel-saving technology such as air-lubrication – typified by that aboard coal carrier Soyo – as well as various vessel optimization measures.

The company’s latest medium-term management plan “More than shipping 2018” was announced in March of this year, and targets further fuel-efficiency increases of 15% over the 2010 level by the FY2018.

The measures are intended “to contribute to the global environment and the creation of sustainable societies by managing environmental risks and arriving at an optimal balance between environment and economy,” according to a company statement.
