Tokyo: NYK (Nippon Yusen Kaisha) says the launch of the NYK Altair on the East-West liner trade highlights its ongoing commitment to environmentally friendly global transportation. The group has invested 70bn yen ($700m when originally committed) over six years in the development of innovative environmental technology despite the economic downturn in recent years.
The NYK Altair incorporates some innovative developments in engine design. She is fitted with a DU-Wartsila RT Flex 96C propulsion engine. Environmental advantages of the engine include:
o Smokeless operation at all running speeds
o Lower fuel consumption than conventional engines
o Reduced Nitrogen Oxide (NOx) emissions
o High-efficiency waste heat recovery
The vessel has recently made her maiden call to Europe, arriving in Hamburg at the weekend. NYK's previous vessel named NYK Altair was launched in 1994. At the time, her 4,743 TEU capacity made her the largest containership in Japan.
The new NYK Altair follows NYK's introduction of the award-winning Auriga Leader and the unveiling of the company's concept ship, NYK Super Eco Ship 2030. [02/11/10]
