Tokyo: Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK) says it intends to "aggressively expand" its LNG operations, the number of group-owned carriers scheduled to rise from 37 to 67 by 2010. In order to ensure a stable supply of crew and safe opertaions, the company has had its training programme for seafarers certified by DNV to be in accordance with the LNG Shipping Suggested Competency Standards (SIGGTO Standards) established late last year by the Society of International Gas Tanker and Terminal Operators. NYK's LNG Carrier Training Standard Course is taught at the NYK Maritime Training Centre in Shin-Sugita, where around 10 seafarers at a time can benefit from simulator-based instruction. [14/09/06]
