NYK-TDG open maritime academy in the Philippines

Manila: Shipping giants Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK) and the Transnational Diversified Group (TDG) have inaugurated the new NYK-TDG Maritime Academy last week in the presence of officials such as Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, president of the Philippines (pictured) and Koichiro Yamazaki, Japanese ambassador to the Philippines.
proudly welcomed around 950 students and guests to the grand opening of the new NYK-TDG Maritime Academy.

30 instructors (including part-time instructors) will guide 120 students each year through the system, which consists of three years of classroom work followed by one year of onboard training.

In a statement, NYK said that the lack of qualified seafarers prompted it to "establish this maritime college, which will educate and train future crew members during their school years so that they will not only be able to handle issues involving management but will also gain practical knowledge that is required on board vessels."
