Muscat: A 15.8 million Omani riyal ($41m) expansion project was launched at the Port of Khasab in Oman last week, reports Gulfnews. The first phase of the project will involve an outflow of approximately $33m on developing marine activities including the expansion of the breakwater to 575 metres, construction of a 445 metre second breakwater, refilling part of the port partially to 770,000 square metres, construction of a 300-metre commercial dock, and setting up a commercial zone.
A $7m second phase will develop basic infrastructure such as buildings for departures, administration, Coast Guard, immigration and customs, storage facilities, car parking and internal roads. The government hopes that the expansion will not only promote domestic trade but also help develop tourism and commerce in the area. [07/02/07]
