Despite the number of idle ships over 500 teu falling by four to 185, total idle capacity increased from 416,000 teu to 443,000 teu in the space of two weeks.
The idle 3,000-5,100 teu Panamax fleet increased by eight vessels in the fortnight to 47, and increased pressure remains on the sector from redeliveries over the next few months.
Alphaliner does however speculate that capacity withdrawal may be less severe than last year, as void sailings are used to reduce capacity instead of withdrawing entire services, with such void sailings most common on the Asia-Europe trades.
