Pelindo III investing in $24m in 11 automatic RTGs for Tanjung Emas Port
Indonesia's state-owned port operator Pelindo III will spend up to $24.3m to purchase 11 automated rubber-tired gantry (ARTG) cranes from Konecranes to boost capacity at its Central Java container terminal at Tanjung Emas Port in Semarang, local reports said.

Pelindo III unit development and commercial director Husein Latief was quoted as saying that new cranes will enable the terminal to handle 800,000 teu within the next five years.

The cranes will be delivered in 2015 and will be in full operation at the end of the year. With container throughput increasing 9% to 10% every year at the terminal, the new equipment and expansion plans are prudent. Throughput reached 498,717 teu last year, rising from 457,152 teu in 2012.

Husein said that the new automated cranes would cut costs by 40% as compared to the current conventional RTG cranes. Pelindo III is also expanding the terminal’s dock by 105 meters and its container yards by 5.4 hectares. The 11 new cranes will be installed in the new container yards.
